Delivery Management System USPS
The importance of the delivery management system for USPS is inevitable. We will see why? Also, we will tackle a brief background: what is USPS?
What is USPS?
USPS is an abbreviation of the United States Postal Service. It is the official postal service of the United States. The USPS has existed since 1971 when it replaced the US Post Office Department.
USPS is an independent agency that does not receive any funds from the government. It has a monopoly on delivering the mail in the country which gives it a tremendous advantage over its competitors.
USPS delivers about 563 million pieces of mail daily. Customers have to pay for the postage if they want to send any letter or package through USPS. Except when they send mail within their area, known as post zones (ZIP codes).
In case you are wondering how much you pay for postage, there are three components to it:
1. First-class stamps: $0.49 at this moment
2. Postage meter: $0.20 to $0.36 per stamp plus a fixed amount of $10 to $15
3. Package services: $2 per package plus a variable amount of $2 to $8 depending on size and weight
The cost of postage depends on how much mail needs to be delivered. But USPS is not able to deliver every piece of mail, as it is not possible for them to comply with all requests from customers promptly.
Instead, they try to deliver only 80% of all letters and packages sent by customers in a day, which makes them unable to meet customer delivery expectations on time. Hence, many things can go wrong when using USPS as a delivery management system.
Now, how are they able to maintain their delivery management system in USPS?
What is the Intelligent Mail Barcode?
It is a code that represents the mailing address and other details of a letter or package. The barcode can be read by the postal service employees and USPS equipment to schedule, sort, and deliver mail in the most efficient way possible.
The Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB) was introduced back in 1994 to enhance customer service. With the help of this barcode, customers can track their mail online and use Paypal to send money. At the same time check the status of their packages, redirect their mail, and more.
The IMB is placed on the lower-right corner of an envelope or label. It consists of two lines and uses a symbology called Code 128.
How does USPS Use IMB for Delivery Management?
USPS uses data collected through IMB to improve delivery management. USPS has developed many tools and software to collect data on every piece of mail delivered through USPS.
